I am a runner!

I saw a bunch of photos of myself last night. They made me sad. In them I was smiling, in shape, and getting ready to RUN! It feels like a million years ago that I ran the marathon and the ultra, but the truth is they both took place LESS THAN SIX MONTHS AGO!

So today I've decided I'm a runner again. That means there will be more running than walking when I go out. This morning I ran 3 fast-ish miles (8:40 average pace). But it's getting hotter and I felt a wicked headache coming on. So I came back home, went on with my day, and then this afternoon in the 90 degree heat, I headed out again to finish what I'd started. I wasn't even CLOSE to fast during this 4 mile trek, but it got done. And I came home smiling inside, because I'm a runner again!

(Note: I think anyone who runs at any pace at any time is a runner. What I've written about here is just for me at this point in time.)

Hi Leslie! I totally agree with your definition of a runner. And though I may not be one by many people's standards, I still consider myself a runner. :)

Some people think that if they 'run' from the couch to the frig that they are runners......YOU are a runner. YOU will get back to the day, but until you feel right about where you're at, be proud of the road you've chosen. The right road to a healthy life!
Last year, I felt stronger, leaner and 'meaner' and this year, things just aren't clicking right for whatever reason, but we need to keep strong and the circle will eventually come around again!

I am just starting to get my pace under 10:00, so to me, your 8:40 average is pretty dang good lady! Welcome back to running!

8:40 is a little faster than my fastest. Congrats! I'm glad to see you running again. Your dailymile updates and blog posts are always inspiring.

I have a favor to ask you... Can you give me a song to put on my iPod for those 6 sucky miles at the end of the marathon on Sunday? I need all the help I can get and I'm making a play list of all the songs friends and family are suggesting. Don't think about what I would like... Pick a song you like, that way I'd think about you when I run those minutes. I'd really appreciate it! Thanks. I did get this idea from you, and the playlist wouldn't be the same without something from you!

I'm just catching up after a long vacation and am glad to hear you're mentally and physically on the mend. That's a very good thing. Keep up the progress.

My favorite definition (which changes btw) for now about running is this from a Pearl Izumi ad:

IF YOU RAN WITHOUT SACRIFICE, CONGRATULATIONS. YOU JUST JOGGED.
Running hurts. It always has. Woolly mammoths didn’t just roll over onto a plate and serve themselves up to prehistoric man with fries and a shake. They had to be caught - and running down woolly mammoths was a bitch. Guess what? Running is still a bitch, but one with a purpose. It teaches us that good things do not come easy. It teaches us that hard work will be rewarded and laziness will be punished. Don’t expect to learn those life lessons from running’s shiftless stepchild; jogging. Next time you suffer on the roads or trails, suffer proudly. It means you run like an animal.
